Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Rifle, Colorado. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers are proficient in hair testing and are located nationwide to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is adequate for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in substance testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under supervision. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The fibers within growing hair strands capture biomarkers, providing a long-term overview of substance use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to around a 90-day period of drug and alcohol activity. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair—an ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it's advised to collect 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen weight. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, equal body hair quantities can be utilized. Head hair pertains only to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process mainly involves these four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of processing a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input that an electronic chain of custody system may lack.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although it's an efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is likely positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This stage retrieves drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (for instance, urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug testing's complexity.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All likely positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 3 months, in contrast to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Continual usage data: It offers a temporal pattern of substance use rather than capturing only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared with other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the process actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Rifle, CO, hair follicle tests excel over traditional urine tests. The superior accuracy and extended detection window of hair tests provide more dependable outcomes. They enable a comprehensive analysis of drug use history, as opposed to the limited window provided by urine tests, offering unmatched insight into substance use behavior.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Rifle, CO, offers an extensive detection window, typically up to 90 days. This duration grants employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance use history, making it a preferred choice for comprehensive drug testing. Such extended detection enhances the ability to evaluate employees or candidates effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Rifle, CO, the hair follicle test stands out for being tamper-resistant, significantly minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
