In Dove Creek, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our centers are nationwide, providing convenient access if you require a drug or alcohol test through hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown, although body hair may also be acceptable. Hair tests can reveal drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests in recent times is notable, with many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists opting for this method rather than the typical urine test. Hair testing is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and probation officers due to its extended detection window reaching up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and strong resistance to tampering. For most recent drug usages within five days, however, urine testing prevails in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as an influential method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the new hair strand, hair offers an extended-term record of alcohol and various drugs. When collected near the scalp, this method can offer up to around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary uses, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested that the specimen be weighed on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a comparable volume of body hair may be retrieved. When we mention head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases included in the lab processing of a drug result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was securely sealed and transported appropriately, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift inspection for misuse substances. Though Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive outcome needs to be verified before it can be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening indeed require further validation.

In cases where a sample tests tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much reduced levels than other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug assessment the most challenging methodology to undertake.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that are tentatively positive undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair substance checks can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a lesser detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: It is incredibly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: This provides a usage pattern over a time span, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption undetectable: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variances can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
