Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Garfield, Colorado. For those in need of drug or alcohol tests, the company excels in hair testing and offers testing centers across all cities Nationwide that conduct hair tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is often required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance drug policies, assisting courts and individuals on probation. The main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that is difficult to tamper with. However, for screening drug use within the last 5 days, a urine test remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, offering an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection range for alcohol and drug activity. Hair sample collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is nonexistent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-effective procedure to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for it to be admissible in legal settings. Samples presumed positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation are assessed both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other methods.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
