Complete hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Glendale, Colorado. Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing for drugs and alcohol. Our hair testing centers, which are available in cities nationwide, can facilitate such tests. Typically, 1.5-2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests may be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing services.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent drug testing method in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests serve employers adhering to zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probationers. A key advantage is the extended drug detection window—up to 90 days—performed under observed conditions and resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of drugs and alcohol by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of about three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially entered into the laboratory’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage in numerous samples, a positive result calls for confirmation to be legally valid. Any sample with a presumptive positive result in Screening requires further confirmation.

If a sample is typically positive during Screening, further hair from the specimen is used for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect usage for a shorter duration.
  • Resilience against tampering: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variance: Attributes like hair color and individual's hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
