Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Granite, Colorado. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by our nationwide network of testing centers. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from either the scalp or body for most tests. These tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored hair testing options.

The latest trend in drug testing increasingly involves the use of hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests appeal to those with strict no-drug policies, including employers, courts, and probation officers, due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days and resistance to tampering, despite urine tests being more precise for identifying recent use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for detecting substance use and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term profile of substance markers by locking biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate substance consumption over a timespan of roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (or the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for an initial test and verification. For extended EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is advisable. Should scalp hair be insufficient, a comparable volume of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we focus on scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test outcome in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and conveyed accurately, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data inputs absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides a preliminary swift assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening effectively excludes drug use in the majority of cases at a lower cost, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo further validation.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. At this stage, substances are retrieved from hair at far reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging process to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Before confirming, all presumptively positive specimens are washed as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating in a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of substance use over a time span, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs only become visible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the follicles beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
