At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake City, Colorado. If a hair or alcohol test is what you require, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers located across cities nationwide capable of administering these tests. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for the test. Hair samples can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent times. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Corporations with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation supervision employ hair tests. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making tampering almost impossible. Yet, for recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a three-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is ideal. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is scarce, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary, among others.

Overview of Process

The four primary stages in lab processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for most samples, confirming a positive result is necessary for court admissibility. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive results undergo washing before confirmation, as appropriate. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Constraints:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Lake City, CO? The answer lies in its superior detection accuracy and unbeatable reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
