Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Marshall, Colorado. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we excel in hair testing and provide testing centers in cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body should be available for analysis. Hair tests can examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other specialized testing options.

The trend in drug testing has shifted toward hair follicle drug tests over the years. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists now increasingly favor hair tests over urine tests. These tests are crucial for employers with no drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probationers. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their long drug detection period, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and their resistance to tampering. However, urine tests are still preferred for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol use, hair testing is highly regarded. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the laboratory process for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, incorporating the sample into a laboratory's system. This process includes verifying the sample's seal and proper shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. Samples evidencing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are derived from hair at much reduced concentrations relative to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection window.
  • High resistance to cheating: Cheating is exceedingly challenging with a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: Hair drug tests present a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limitation in detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
