Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Midland, Colorado. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise in hair testing is at your service, with convenient locations in cities across the nation that provide hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair can be analyzed for substances like drugs or alcohol/ETG, as well as other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method of drug testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists choose hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary monitoring often rely on hair tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, and the difficulty in tampering due to observed collection. However, urine tests are more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for monitoring drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strands as they grow. A sample taken near the scalp can potentially offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample weight of 150mg is preferable. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step confirms that the sample was securely sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not provide.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for commonly abused substances. Though Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent verification.

In instances where a sample returns a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which underscores the complexity of performing hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credential and those certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can outline a drug use trend over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent usage: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the levels of drug metabolites found in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
