In North Aurora, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our nationwide centers facilitate tests across various cities. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required, be it from the head or body. Diverse analysis options are available for substances, including alcohol/ETG or custom requests.

There's an increasing trend toward hair follicle testing for drug assessments in recent years. Preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests, these hair tests support zero-tolerance policies and probation checks. They offer a detection scope reaching up to 90 days, making evasion nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as a formidable method for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch sample encompassing about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp amounts to 100mg, which is the optimal sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step involves validating that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. All specimens that yield presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral liquid), highlighting why hair drug screening is amongst the most intricate methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned pre-confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is remarkably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited in detecting recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why opt for hair follicle testing over the traditional urine tests in North Aurora, CO? The advantages are clear: superior detection capabilities and enhanced reliability make hair testing a preferred choice. Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides a robust detection window and yields results that far exceed in precision, ensuring greater accuracy in substance use monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
