Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ansonia, Connecticut. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, boasting testing locations in all cities nationwide equipped for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Hair assessments can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a chosen method for drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for employers enforcing strict anti-drug use policies, courts, and probationers. The key advantage is its extensive detection range of up to 90 days, maintained through a monitored collection process, rendering it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for drug screening within a recent 5-day period, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying substance use of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a long-term record of substance use, capturing markers in its growing strand. When collected near the scalp, it can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent body hair amount can be used. By 'head hair', we specify scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating a sample into the laboratory system, confirming the proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entries not recorded by an electronic custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Although cost-effective in excluding drug use in most samples, any positive result in Screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Thus, presumptive positives in Screening need subsequent verification.

For samples with a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction, where drugs are taken from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair testing a challenging procedure.

Confirmation uses methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for positive screening results. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The entire process is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Able to identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows historical usage: Can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect immediate use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair strands.
  • Expensive: Hair testing cost typically surpasses other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
