Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Beacon Falls, Connecticut. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing. We offer services in cities across the U.S. where hair testing is available. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Over recent years, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now demand hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals on probation widely use these tests. The primary advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. It's collected under supervision and is nearly foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands capture a longitudinal record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand develops. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a quarter-year detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended that the sample be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. When saying head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage, where a specimen is incorporated into a lab’s system. This involves confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), plus completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug consumption in most specimens, but a positive result requires confirmation for courtroom validity. All specimens that screen presumptively positive must undergo subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair might be extracted from the original sample for use in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair model and the accreditation ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can reveal drug usage up to three months, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring precise outcomes.
  • Indicates usage patterns: It offers insight into a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It roughly takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the subdermal hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
