Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Durham, Connecticut. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, and our facilities are available in every city nationwide, equipped to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other custom hair testing requests.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for conducting drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for a hair drug test instead of the traditional urine analysis. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage is the extended detection window for drug use—up to 90 days, collected through an observed procedure, making it nearly unfeasible to falsify. Meanwhile, urine tests remain the most accurate for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by integrating biomarkers into the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample processing into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive finding must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, hair undergoes drug extraction at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, yielding more precise results.
  • Historical data provision: It can display a pattern of drug use over a span of time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It needs about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth changes can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Durham, CT, the former offers numerous benefits. Hair testing is known for its superior detection accuracy and reliability, making it a preferred choice in situations where thoroughness is critical. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
