Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wallingford, Connecticut. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our network extends to testing centers in every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for analysis. Among our services are drug, alcohol/ETG, and customizable hair testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted towards the hair follicle method. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Their benefits include a longer detection span—up to 90 days—and an observed collection process that's hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain unmatched for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have earned recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within its growing strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is considered the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair not be an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Conversely, body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result typically involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the entry of a sample into a lab's system. This phase encompasses the verification of proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, expedited test for detecting drug presence. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Preparation of Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with their more limited detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: It's notably challenging to beat a hair drug test, enhancing the credibility of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use spanning a duration, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: A period of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair development can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation actually scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle present beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the competitive testing landscape, hair follicle testing in Wallingford, CT emerges as superior over traditional urine tests. What stands out is its vast detection history, capable of tracing drug use for up to 90 days. This depth of insight drastically surpasses urine's short window.

Moreover, the accuracy and reliability of hair tests ensure minimal scope for error, as opposed to less secure urine screenings. The reliability coupled with ease of specimen collection provides employers and organizations with a steadfast measure to maintain safe, productive environments.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
