In Glenville, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing hair testing with facilities available in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has gained popularity in drug testing. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse authorities are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method caters to employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probationary settings. Its main advantage is a longer detection span of 90 days, minimizing the chance of tampering, though urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use, up to 5 days prior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronological record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can unveil up to a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is ideal. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure specimen weight. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When "head hair" is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair, unlike "body hair," which includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system, verifying if the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although screening is economically efficient for negating drug use in most samples, positive screens must be validated for court acceptance. Samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

In case of a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the primary sample for Extraction, wherein drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a pre-confirmation wash as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can register drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It tracks drug-use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have a higher cost relative to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
