Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Norwalk, Connecticut. When in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities located in all major cities across the nation. You should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown, or body hair might be used as an alternative. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screenings. Employers, judiciary, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair follicle drug tests due to their extensive detection period, typically lasting up to 90 days, collected through an observed process that is nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extended historical record of substances by encasing biomarkers within the hair fiber during growth. When collected at the scalp, it can grant a roughly three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hairs (akin to a #2 pencil's dimension) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is advised for assessing the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn't present, body hair in equivalent quantity may be used. Scalp hair specifically pertains to head hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory stages for processing drug test results encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample into the laboratory’s network. This stage includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and dispatch, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for misuse of drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive result is essential for court acceptance. Presumptively positive samples during Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

For samples showing potential positivity in Screening, additional hair from the original specimen undergoes preparation for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive results from screening require Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive undergo necessary washing prior to Confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair analysis can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Cheating difficulty: Altering results in hair drug tests is highly challenging, increasing result reliability.
  • Shows historical usage: It reveals patterns of substance use over a sustained period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair analysis typically costs more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
