Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hartford, Connecticut. Should you require a test for hair drug or alcohol use, our experts are available at centers nationwide, including Hartford. For valid results, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or ample body hair is needed. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting drug use. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts increasingly demand hair testing over traditional urine tests. These tests cater to organizations with strict no-drug policies, judiciary demands, and probation tracking. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its extensive detection time frame—generally up to 90 days—and its high resistance to fraudulent actions. Nonetheless, for recent drug use—under five days—urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the advancing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, it's advised to collect 150mg of the sample. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we mean scalp hair strictly. Body hair includes all other variations (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample's seal and correct shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary manual data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening implies an initial swift search for substances of abuse. Though it offers a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, any positive screening requires verification for legal admission. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive outcomes at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at far less concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug testing the most complex method to carry out.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any possible positive samples are cleansed prior to verification as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can recognize drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug screenings are extremely hard to falsify, ensuring more accurate findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It could reflect a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to register in hair strands.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may impact the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although typically termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
