Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Lyme, Connecticut. If you’re seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to assist. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for the test. Our analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been preferred. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for these over the conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers value hair tests for their lengthy drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, while being collected under observation to prevent tampering. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still provide the most accurate results.

What it is, How it works

In recent years, hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair capture biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a timeline of use for alcohol and drugs extending up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, rather resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields about 100mg, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplement tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This involves verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, explaining why hair drug screening is more challenging.

Any positive screen results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives are washed as needed. The complete process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Presents historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
