Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug testing in Yorklyn, Delaware. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you need, we are experts in hair testing with facilities available throughout the United States. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required in most cases. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing approaches have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probationary monitoring. Hair follicle tests offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and are hard to deceive, although for recent drug use, the urine test remains unrivaled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest evaluating the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This process includes confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a history of drug consumption over time, not just the recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally come at a higher cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is proving more beneficial than traditional urine tests in Yorklyn, DE. Its superior detection accuracy and reliability make it a preferred choice for employers seeking dependable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
