Located in Anna Maria, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those seeking hair or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is accompanied by nationwide testing facilities equipped to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of one's head or body is needed. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair over the traditional urine drug tests. This type of test suits employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and those on probation. A significant advantage is its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, collected through an observed method, making it extremely difficult to manipulate. For recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair captures biomarkers within its growing strands, it offers a prolonged history of substance use. By sampling hair close to the scalp, it’s possible to detect alcohol and drugs for a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for preliminary tests and confirmations. For more extensive panels such as EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, collecting 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types, like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase integrates the sample into the lab's tracking system by ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not already handled by electronic systems.

The Screening phase is a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates non-positive samples, to be valid in legal contexts, a positive result requires confirmation. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a positive indication at Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for further Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those in urine or saliva tests, underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo washing before Confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug intake up to 90 days back, while urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to obscure: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage trends: Offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, beyond mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be identified in hair.
  • Pricing: Hair tests tend to be costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
