Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Bayshore, Florida. Whether your requirement is for a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures reliable results, with centers available in every city across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

The trend towards using hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods has increased in recent years. Many employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests instead of typical urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation cases frequently rely on hair follicle tests due to their extensive detection period—up to 90 days—and enhanced accuracy. While hair tests cover longer periods, urine tests still provide more accurate results for detecting recent drug use, within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and pharmaceutical use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands during growth. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal substance intake over a period of about three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transport is effortless.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers approximately 100mg, which is the preferred amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional components, or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in laboratory drug test processing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial system entry in a lab. This includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening cost-effectively excludes drug consumption for most specimens, a court-admissible result requires confirmation of a positive screen. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Should a sample be positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most intricate technique.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS validates any positive Screening outcomes. All samples with presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before verification. The entire progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug consumption for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Testing integrity: Deception in hair drug testing is considerably difficult, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insight: It maps a timeline of drug usage over a stretch instead of merely new consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate usage: Myriad drugs manifest in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair hue and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Bayshore, FL

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine analysis, several key advantages stand out. Hair tests offer a superior detection window, spotting drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests have a much shorter span. This extended window provides a comprehensive look at an individual's substance history.

Additionally, the reliability of hair tests surpasses that of urine tests. Quick and precise in nature, hair testing minimizes the risk of tampering, offering results that reflect true substance use. These factors make hair follicle tests the preferred choice for organizations focusing on long-term monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Bayshore, FL

One of the most compelling advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, reaching back up to 90 days. This broad window provides employers with a detailed picture of an individual's drug history, essential for making informed decisions.

Hair tests capture information over a more extended period than traditional methods, offering not just a snapshot but a timeline of substance use. This capability is invaluable in assessing an applicant or employee's compliance with company drug-free policies, ensuring a safer workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
