Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Berkeley, Florida. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have centers across the nation ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more common in drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer them over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by strict no-drug-use workplaces, courts, and probation requirements. Their key benefit is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, observed during collection, and hard to tamper with. For the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair encapsulates markers within the fibers of the strand as it grows, offering a comprehensive history of substance use. Sampling near the scalp, hair can reveal usage patterns for up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil) from where they emerge at the scalp, provides 100mg—a suitable quantity for both screening and verification. For extensive tests such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measurement is prudent. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent amount from body hair is acceptable. Note that 'head hair' specifically refers to 'scalp hair', while 'body hair' includes all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s records, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, and is assigned a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), while any additional entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system are completed.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. It serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most cases; however, any positive findings need supplementary confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives identified in Screening must be further confirmed.

In cases of presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex procedure to execute.

Any positive outcomes from Screening are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Required pre-confirmation washing of samples that preliminarily test positive is conducted. The full procedure, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption over a period extending up to 90 days, contrasting with urine analysis which offers a reduced detection span.
  • Resistance to deceit: Hair drug testing presents a considerable challenge for manipulation, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Allows recognition of drug use patterns over prolonged intervals, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days post-consumption to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative testing modalities.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual growth rates may alter the drug metabolite concentration found in hair.

Note: Often labeled "hair follicle tests", these examinations actually assess the hair strand, excluding the subdermal hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Berkeley, FL, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in accuracy and reliability. While urine tests provide shorter detection windows, hair testing reveals substance use for up to 90 days, ensuring comprehensive results. With its superior precision, hair tests are a preferred choice for thorough drug screening.

Traditional urine tests fall short in reliability compared to hair testing. Hair testing ensures a broader history view, reducing the risk of undetected substance use, catering to a proactive safety culture.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Berkeley, FL extends the detection window far beyond traditional tests. Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, it allows employers a detailed insight into the substance history of individuals, offering a broad overview that's invaluable for informed decisions.

This elongated detection window ensures that more past substance usage is captured, providing a thorough assessment of an individual's habits and compliance to company standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing makes it a preferred choice in Berkeley, FL. Its resilience against sample adulteration ensures reliable results, mitigating risks associated with compromised specimens, providing reassurance of accurate outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
