In Chokoloskee, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers nationwide, equipped to perform such tests. The requirement generally involves having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

The trend of utilizing hair follicle drug tests has grown in recent years. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers with stringent drug policies, legal obligations, and individuals under probationary conditions. They offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days and involve an observed collection process, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by incorporating biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection history of up to about three months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily manipulated, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplementary add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend assessing the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedure primarily consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step comprises verifying that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to discount drug usage across most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is identified as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than with other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing represents one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection time frame.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely arduous, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Supplies historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically bear higher costs than many alternative testing methods.
  • Potential result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence detectable metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
