Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug evaluations in Houston, Florida. For those needing a hair or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair analysis, with testing centers situated across cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair exam. Typically, the hair should be between 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized hair testing packages.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in substance detection methods. Many organizations, legal entities, and addiction experts now prefer hair drug examinations over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle drug evaluations serve zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary system, and those under surveillance. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their ability to trace drug use over a span of up to 90 days with supervised sample collection, making evasion almost impossible. Nonetheless, for recent drug consumption within the last 5 days, the urine test remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can log a historical record of drug and alcohol use by holding onto biomarkers within its fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches made up of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil) situated nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For testing EtG, additional testing, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is needed. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Our mention of head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially incorporating a sample into the lab’s operations. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and records any extra necessary information not included via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drug substances. It offers a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples; however, a positive indication from Screening requires confirmation to be valid in a court setting. Samples that are uncertainly positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample not be conclusively negative during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are extracted from the hair in lesser concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening notably complex.

For any confirmed positive results from Screening, confirmation is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any suspect positive samples are cleansed as necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire procedure is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and aligned with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, thus producing more credible results.
  • Gives historical data: It reveals a continual pattern of drug consumption over time, as opposed to just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and the difference in individual hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although common to call them "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Houston, FL stands out in the realm of drug testing. Unlike urine tests, which track substance intake over a shorter span, hair tests offer prolonged detection. They detect longstanding drug use, providing enhanced accuracy and are less susceptible to tampering, ensuring more reliable screening results. These benefits make hair testing a superior option for both employers and individuals.

In contrast to urine assessments, a longer detection window allows hair tests to reveal substance use patterns extending nearly three months. Their use leads to fewer disputes in findings and establishes greater trust in workplace policy enforcement in Houston, FL.

Extended Detection Window

With a capability to detect drug use spanning up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Houston, FL offers unique insights into substance history, crucial for comprehensive screening. The extended window aids employers in obtaining an all-encompassing review of applicants or employees, essential for informed decisions regarding workplace safety and compliance.

This testing method helps to ensure passers of substance screenings have engaged in a long-term drug-free lifestyle, pivotal for roles requiring high reliability and accountability. By offering an expanded detection period, hair tests present a reliable solution for assessing an individual's substance-free commitment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Houston, FL, the hair follicle test's tamper-resistant nature significantly minimizes adulteration risks, ensuring credible and unquestionable results. The collection process for hair samples reduces opportunities for sample manipulation, unlike urine tests, enhancing the reliability of results and providing peace of mind for all stakeholders involved in testing processes.

Hair tests virtually eliminate deceit strategies commonly associated with other testing measures. Their intrinsic design makes it hard for individuals to alter or tamper with samples, elevating overall test integrity and accuracy, thus enhancing trust in outcomes presented by these evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
