Located in Ives Estates, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in this type of testing, we have centers across various cities throughout the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests over recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for them over standard urine tests. These tests appeal to companies with zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, and probationary monitoring, offering a longer detection window of approximately 90 days and almost foolproof collection. However, for detection of drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The growing hair strand captures biomarkers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When sourced near the scalp, hair reveals a detection timeline for alcohol and drugs extending up to roughly 3 months. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample for analyses and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be taken. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched accurately, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional information entry beyond what the electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening offers a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is a challenging methodology.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire processing from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
