Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive services for hair follicle drug screening in June Park, Florida. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area with centers across the nation ready to administer the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have often incorporated hair follicle drug examinations. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug exams are favored by companies with strict anti-drug regulations, legal entities, and those on probation. The key advantage lies in its extended detection timeframe for substances, lasting nearly 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making tampering almost impossible. However, for detecting drug use in the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When extracted near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) proximate to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for initial testing and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, extended screens, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advocated. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This incorporates confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for abused drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification for legal acceptability. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair in much lower concentrations than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
