Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Lorida, Florida. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities across all cities Nationwide to facilitate such tests. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair evaluations can be conducted to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or for specific tailored hair test purposes.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle drug exams. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer this over standard urine testing. Hair follicle testing serves entities with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and those under probation. The principal advantage is its extended detection capacity for drug use, spanning up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and is nearly foolproof. However, for identifying drug consumption within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to around 3 months. It is straightforward to collect, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch cut consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, considered the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, the same volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four principal stages encompass the lab processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s framework, which includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use across most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal proceedings. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require further verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, substances are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug tests as challenging to execute.

Affirmation of every positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete lab workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can track drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine testing with its shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to deceit: Manipulating hair drug evaluations is notably difficult, resulting in more credible findings.
  • Offers longitudinal data: Hair testing can indicate drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier relative to other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables such as hair hue and individual hair growth discrepancies may influence the density of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the test scrutinizes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
