Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mayo, Florida. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis and have testing facilities in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head; body hair may also be used in most situations. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. A growing number of employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists mandate hair drug testing over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation often use hair follicle tests. The major advantage is their longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected with observation and resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most accurate when detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can supply a detection duration of up to about 90 days for both alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional screenings, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample being entered into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. While it is an economical method to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be validated legally. All samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations relative to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging approach.

Results from any positive screenings are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Deception in hair drug testing is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides chronological data: It offers a timeline of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and growth rate differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
