Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Micco, Florida. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing sites available in all U.S. cities to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have progressively incorporated hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests rather than typical urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers. The key advantage of these tests is their extended detection capability, generally reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision and difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug use, within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The concept of hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of an expanding hair, hair offers an extended chronological record of substance use. When procured near the scalp, hair can deliver up to roughly a 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing around 200 strands of hair (approximately the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be obtained. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. Activities include ensuring the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry that may not be provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening features a preliminary rapid analysis for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient measure to exclude drug consumption in the majority of cases, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal acceptability. Samples registering presumptive positives during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a presumptive positive is detected during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other practices (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a shorter detection interval.
  • Difficult to tamper: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: Provides a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests generally incur more expense compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels found in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Micco, FL
Hair follicle testing triumphs over urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy and extended window of identification. Unlike urine tests, which often detect drug use only a few days before testing, hair tests can pinpoint drug use up to 90 days prior. This provides employers with a broader perspective of an individual's drug history.

Furthermore, hair tests greatly reduce the risk of sample manipulation. While urine samples are susceptible to adulteration attempts, hair testing requires directly observed sample collection, ensuring greater integrity. This makes them particularly advantageous for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies and needing irrefutable proof of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Micco, FL
Hair follicle testing presents an extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days. This long-term overview is unmatched by traditional urine tests, offering employers a thorough insight into an individual's substance history. Such comprehensive results assist businesses in making informed hiring or disciplinary decisions.

With this broader timeframe, companies can confidently address past drug use concerns, enhancing their selection processes. The extended detection window ensures a more reliable evaluation of a candidate's or employee's ability to maintain a drug-free lifestyle, promoting a healthier workforce environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Micco, FL
The structure of hair follicle testing makes it substantially more tamper-resistant compared to other methods. Hair samples are less vulnerable to adulteration, and the meticulous process ensures undeniable integrity. This means test results are virtually incontrovertible, providing trustworthy data for employers and legal professionals alike.

By minimizing the risk of sample manipulation, hair follicle tests deliver more reliable and honest results. This aspect is essential for industries or individuals requiring the utmost accuracy in drug use detection, as it fosters trust in the testing process, setting it above less secure urine testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
