Specializing in comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Odessa, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we provide expert hair testing services with facilities available throughout all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair analysis can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recent trends show a rise in utilizing hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The major advantage is the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, combined with a supervised collection procedure, making it virtually tamper-proof. Despite urine tests being more accurate for recent drug history, within the past 5 days, hair tests offer long-term assessment.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This type of testing offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When samples are taken from near the scalp, they can offer a detection window of up to about 90 days for both alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is easy, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial scrutiny and validation. For EtG, additions, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is recommended to measure the weight of the hair with a jeweler’s scale. For cases where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is a suitable alternative. Reference to head hair relates specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into the laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial rapid test is conducted to detect potential drug use. Screening is a financially efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, but any positive result from Screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug tests particularly challenging to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screening results. All samples that are presumptive positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Records historical usage: Provides a timeline of drug use over months, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited in recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Odessa, FL, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. The longevity of detection—up to 90 days—far surpasses that of urine tests, making it a more comprehensive choice for employers seeking in-depth substance history checks on employees or candidates.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing allows for a much longer detection period, up to 90 days, thus providing employers with extensive insights into an applicant or employee's drug use history. This enables a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual's substance habits and supports informed decision-making in the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
