Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Orchid, Florida. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers available in every U.S. city to conduct the procedure. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can check for drug use, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has been increasingly popular in recent years. Many organizations and professionals, such as employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors, favor hair samples over urine tests. Hair drug testing is ideal for zero-tolerance employers, judicial cases, and probation scenarios due to its longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and high resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the preferred method for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month window of drug and alcohol usage. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equals 100mg, the optimum amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioned as head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory analysis for drug testing encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within the laboratory setting. This includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening functions as a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use across most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that presumptively test positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assays check for drug usage up to a span of 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Test integrity: It's notably tough to manipulate a hair drug assay, enhancing the reliability of outcomes.
  • Chronological insight: It reveals a consistent pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth might impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually assesses the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
