Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Oxford, Florida. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our firm excels in hair examinations, with centers available in all cities across the country to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug assessments. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair testing is favored by those enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers. Its extended detection window, up to 90 days, provides a thorough assessment and is performed under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. For drug use about 5 days prior, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a significant method, hair testing aids in identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair archives alcohol and drug history over time by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary procedures, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Precise weighing of the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn't present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, which involves integrating a specimen into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as an economical measure to negate drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Any samples likely positive at the Screening phase demand further confirmation.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral specimen), thus making hair drug testing one of the most difficult processes to execute.

Confirmation of any screening being positive is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably hard to cheat, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug consumption pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to sense recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can sway the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing? In Oxford, FL, the advantages of hair analysis are clear: it offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can only track recent drug use, hair tests provide a comprehensive view across a longer period, ensuring detection of all potential substance use.

Error margins are significantly lower with hair follicle tests, making them an exceedingly reliable option over traditional urine tests. For workplaces instituting stringent regulatory policies, the enhanced detection capabilities of hair tests offer peace of mind without the uncertainties associated with urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
