Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ridge Manor, Florida. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing means we have centers across the nation ready to perform your test. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or other body parts. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or even be tailored for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their key advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, collected in a monitored process that's nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent drug use, particularly within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drugs by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can give up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, comprising about 200 strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for tests and confirmations. For EtG, as well as additional or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg amount of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be selected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economically efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the comprehensive lab process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug use over time, not confined to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
