Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in San Antonio, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for specialized hair testing. Our nationwide centers, including those in every city, are equipped to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests provide options for analyzing drug use, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly turned to hair follicle testing. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle testing is favored due to its long detection window reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation, minimizing chances of tampering. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust tool, hair testing is frequently utilized for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. Gathering hair close to the scalp can present up to an estimated three-month detection period for alcohol and substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

Approximately 200 strands of 1.5-inch hair samples (equivalent to a #2 pencil in diameter) near the scalp yield the ideal 100mg sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weight measurement is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair specifically indicates scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four core steps constitute the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring samples are properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift analysis for substances of abuse. Though economical in excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), attributing to the challenging nature of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods facilitate Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection capability: Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Minimized cheating risk: It is notably challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Longitudinal data provision: Capable of revealing a drug use pattern over time beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
