Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle testing services throughout Surfside, Florida. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair follicle assessments. Our facilities are readily available across numerous cities nationwide, adept at conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested. The hair analysis accommodates drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

The utilization of hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly prevalent in recent times. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial bodies, and probationary individuals frequently opt for hair testing. The key advantage is its longer detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days back, with an observed collection, thereby ensuring it is hard to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain unrivaled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of hair during its growth, hair offers a detailed chronological history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and various other drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both initial assessment and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is preferable. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The core stages encompassing the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary handling of a specimen within a lab's system. This phase entails confirming the sample's secure sealing and proper shipment, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage across most samples, any positive results necessitate Confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Every sample tested positive in Screening mandates a secondary Confirmation step.

In cases where a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a highly intricate procedure.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical profiling: This method can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, rather than indicating only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Typically, there is a 5-7 day period before drugs become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements including hair color and individual differences in hair growth could influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
