In Wewahitchka, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. If you are in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our nationwide network includes testing locations in every city. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is often required for analysis for substances like alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made tests.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular recently for drug testing. Preferred by employers, courts, and addiction specialists, they serve as an alternative to urine tests for individuals subject to zero-tolerance policies or probations. Hair tests offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days, ensuring reliable results while minimizing tampering possibilities. However, urine tests remain supreme for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its strands. When cut near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption history spanning approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy for transportation.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (roughly equal to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be used instead. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial introduction of a sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any supplementary data that isn't available electronically through a chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use suspicions in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which are limited to a shorter timeframe.
  • Not easily manipulated: It's extremely tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage patterns: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Around 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is of the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Wewahitchka, FL, hair follicle tests offer several advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair testing provides a much longer detection window, giving a detailed view of substance use over time. Compared to urine tests, hair tests are less prone to tampering and offer greater accuracy. This makes hair tests a more reliable option, especially for employers and institutions requiring comprehensive drug use histories.

In the realm of drug detection, the hair follicle test's accuracy and reliability outshine urine tests. Unlike urine testing that might miss long-term substance use, hair samples retain traces of drugs for up to 90 days. This longer timeframe enhances the ability to assess an individual's drug use history comprehensively. As such, the adoption of hair tests over traditional methods continues to rise in Wewahitchka, FL.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing makes it a valuable tool in Wewahitchka, FL. Spanning up to 90 days, this testing approach surpasses other methods by providing a thorough view of an individual's substance use. Employers benefit from this extended window as it reveals consistent usage patterns missed by shorter-term tests. Hair testing thus provides a robust framework for evaluating potential hires or existing employees.

In Wewahitchka, FL, hair follicle tests are favored for their capacity to reveal drug use over an extended period. With detection abilities reaching up to three months, these tests offer a more accurate depiction of an individual's substance consumption habits. This comprehensive view aids employers in making informed hiring decisions and maintaining drug-free work environments, highlighting the test's importance in long-term monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
