Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Arabi, Georgia. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with testing centers established across all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, you need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, though body hair may also be used. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer special hair testing options.

In recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. Their chief advantage is an extended detection window for drug use, typically covering up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making them almost impossible to cheat. Still, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of roughly 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. In referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to rule out drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be court-admissible. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are initially positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can exhibit a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
