Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dewy Rose, Georgia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, their specialization in hair testing is evident with test centers located across all cities nationwide to conduct a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly turned to hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over the traditional urine method. Hair testing is utilized by companies with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services. The key advantage is the longer detection window of up to 90 days, achieved through an observed collection that’s hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by retaining biomarkers in the hair shaft's fibers. When collected close to the scalp, hair analysis can detect alcohol and drug use for up to roughly a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both initial screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, supplementary examinations, or those exceeding 10 drug panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, it refers uniquely to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not given by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result in screening must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis a challenging methodology.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are particularly challenging to fake, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It can illustrate a history of drug usage over extended periods, not only recent occurrences.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
