Located in Elberton, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're in need of hair drug or alcohol screenings, we excel in hair analysis with centers available nationwide. For most tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair testing accommodates drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity recently for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer it over urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, and probationary needs, the primary benefit is a 90-day detection window with a supervised collection, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record-keeper for alcohol and drugs, capturing biomarkers within its fibers. When obtained near the scalp, it can offer an approximate three-month detection span for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s diameter) from near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It’s advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair imply scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test outcomes encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of the sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses validating that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves conducting an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it efficiently rules out drug presence in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples presumed positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. In this step, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter duration.
  • Highly resistant to cheating: Altering hair drug test results is notably challenging, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a prolonged pattern of drug use, rather than focusing on recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Elberton, GA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by providing enhanced accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests unveil a broader history, ensuring comprehensive insights into an individual's substance habits. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
