Offering thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Menlo, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing caters to those requiring a hair or alcohol analysis. As experts in this field, our centers thrive nationwide, prepared for hair testing. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp suffices, though body hair might also be utilized. Evaluations include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent times, drug testing strategies increasingly rely on hair follicle assays. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair tests over conventional urine analyses. Such tests are favored by entities mandating total abstinence from drugs, courts, and probation officers. The primary advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensured by a supervised collection process that is nearly immune to tampering. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to about a 3-month period. It's straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, it's advised to gather 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, we are solely referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing as it enters a lab’s system. This process confirms that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that might be missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage in most cases, any positive screen must be validated for court purposes. Samples that show a presumptive positive require a secondary confirmation.

For samples that appear positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug testing being the most challenging methodology to perform.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation when needed. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer window.
  • Difficulty in falsifying: Hair drug tests are very challenging to fake, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical perspective: They can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the test actually assesses the hair shaft, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle to urine tests in Menlo, GA, the former emerges as superior. Hair testing boasts enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, revealing substance use over a more extended period. This offers a clear advantage for employers aiming for thorough assessments, ensuring they receive comprehensive insights into drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
