For comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Panhandle, Georgia, turn to Accredited Drug Testing. We are experts in hair drug and alcohol testing, with centers across the nation in every city, ready to conduct your test. Generally, hair on the crown of the head, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair can be tested for substances, including drugs and alcohol, or other specialized testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening processes. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential in workplaces with strict drug-free policies, court systems, and probation programs, offering a notable advantage of detecting drug use over a 90-day period. While they provide undeniable reliability, urine tests remain the preferred choice for identifying use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sourced directly from the scalp area, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and subsequent verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to gather 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accuracy in weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's system. This step involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information not captured by an electronic custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples showing indicative positive results in Screening require subsequent verification.

If the Screening process yields a presumptive positive, further hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the more challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with a hair test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Records usage history: It delivers an overview of drug usage history over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Is Superior: Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in Panhandle, GA, offers greater detection accuracy and reliability. It ensures an uncompromised look into user habits over an extended timeframe, making it more effective for comprehensive substance evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
