Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Valley, Georgia. If hair drug or alcohol testing is required, our specialization in hair tests extends across all U.S. cities, offering convenient hair analysis. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific requirements.

Recently, drug testing has shifted towards the inclusion of hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle screenings are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and probation offices due to their extensive detection period, usually up to 90 days, and secure collection methods that are hard to manipulate. For drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has established itself as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeline for alcohol and drug detection. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipment is convenient.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in a lab’s processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step verifies the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While it is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result during screening demands verification to be accepted legally. Samples deemed presumptively positive necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample registers a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen to prep for Extraction. Drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations here than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as particularly intricate.

Verification of any positive screen is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a cleaning process before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a reduced detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
