Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Ahuimanu, Hawaii. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, we have numerous centers Nationwide ready to assist you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. Tests can include drug panels, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists lean towards hair testing rather than urine due to its advantages. It's ideal for those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, as well as legal situations. The key benefit is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, and hard-to-tamper nature. However, for immediate detection within 5 days, urine tests remain top-notch.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair allows for up to an estimated 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and in cases of more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair might be taken. By head hair, we mean only the hair from the scalp. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of drug test analysis include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory processing of a specimen within a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial swift analysis for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most specimens, a positive Screen must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent Confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is procured from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before Confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, improving result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a drug use pattern over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the testing targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
