Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Mountain View, Hawaii. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our centers specialize in hair tests, with facilities across the nation capable of conducting these assessments. Ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head; otherwise, body hair may suffice. For drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options, hair analyses can be performed.

In recent times, the procedure for drug evaluations has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance misuse advisors now opt for hair assessments over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation commonly use hair follicle tests. A key advantage is the longer detection span—up to 90 days—through an observed collection, which is nearly foolproof. Yet, for assessing recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of alcohol and drug use by capturing markers in the fibers of the growing hair. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a 3-month timeline for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or panels beyond 10, 150mg of hair is preferable. We advise measuring the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we say head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to any other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory's framework. This step ensures that the sample was sealed correctly and transported properly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples shown to be presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus increasing the precision of the results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use habits over time, not merely current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs appear in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result differences: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
