Located in Fern Acres, Hawaii, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in both drug and alcohol detection, our centers are found in every major city across the nation. For accurate results, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed, and our tests offer flexible options to detect various substances.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity recently, often replacing traditional urine tests. Employers, legal entities, and professionals in substance abuse rely on this method due to its precision. It allows for a thorough assessment of up to 90 days of substance use history and presents an almost foolproof testing process. However, for recent drug use of 5 days or less, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It delivers an extended overview of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an insight into substance usage over a span of roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair—the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG assessments, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding ten, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the hair specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term 'head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result typically involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system, which involves checking that it was securely packaged and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any additional data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, although a positive screening requires further confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that test positive during Screening necessitate secondary verification.

In the event of a presumptive positive in Screening, a portion of the initial hair specimen is used for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening being among the more challenging techniques.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples tested positive during Screening are washed before being confirmed as necessary. The systematic laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a considerably shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records of past usage: Provides a view of drug consumption trends over time, not just contemporary usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair tint and individual hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the focus of the analysis is the hair strand, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
