In Olinda, Hawaii, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise extends nationwide, providing hair tests across numerous cities. For testing, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. These tests handle a range of substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, among others.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted in recent times. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over urine tests. This is common with zero-tolerance policies by employers, legal requirements by courts, or conditions of probation. A key advantage is its detection period up to 90 days. Though, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as they grow. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. In contrast, body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s processes. This process involves checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for signs of drug consumption. While Screening serves as a cost-effective method to identify drug use in most cases, a positive result demands confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample results in a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex to perform.

Confirming any positive Screening results is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter time frame.
  • Cheat resistance: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: Offers insights into a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Higher costs: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
