Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Waiakoa, Hawaii. If hair or alcohol tests are required, trust Accredited Drug Testing as a specialist in hair sampling with facilities Nationwide. Hair length from 1.5 to 2 inches at the crown of the head or body can be used. Tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair analysis options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are now opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favorable for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers. These tests boast an extended detection window of up to 90 days, are collected through monitored collections, and are nearly foolproof.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs of approximately up to 3 months. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests above 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps involved in processing a drug test result are divided into Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage of introducing a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This stage includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a cursory examination to identify drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a budget-friendly method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive indication necessitates further confirmation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows possible positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive outcomes from Screening are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that display presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation, as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating difficulty: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can highlight a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
