Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wailea, Hawaii. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing ensures reliable results. We have testing centers nationwide, including all cities, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing appeals to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to its longer drug use detection window, generally up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the immediate past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the emerging hair strands. When secured near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month lookout period for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently shippable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be acquired. References to head hair denote scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result includes four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This step includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry gaps that an electronic custody chain system might leave.

Screening represents a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is economical in ruling out drug presence in most samples, any positive indication needs validation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a confirmation follow-up.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis a highly challenging technique.

Confirmation for positive Screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter range.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wailea, HI, hair follicle drug tests offer numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. Superior detection accuracy allows for identification of substances over extended periods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
