Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Conkling Park, Idaho. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have centers across all cities Nationwide ready for your testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body for analysis. These tests can track drugs, alcohol/ETG or follow other specified testing options.

In recent years, there has been an increasing shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This method is favored by employers committed to zero-tolerance drug policies and mandatory for court and probation settings. A primary advantage is its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection process that minimizes cheating. However, for drug detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged account of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When extracted near the scalp, hair yields up to a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. It is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp produces 100mg, forming an ideal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test outcome encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the introductory handling of a sample into a lab's system. This stage ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid analysis for prohibited substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to stand in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary verification.

For samples testing presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (i.e., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation on any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can signal drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, rendering more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a record of drug consumption over an extended duration, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undiscoverable: Drugs are detectable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
