Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dalton Gardens, Idaho. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we focus on hair testing with centers available in all major cities Nationwide, capable of conducting these tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for the test. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection range, typically up to 90 days, taken under supervised collection, making it hard to adulterate. However, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair analysis has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases long-term evidence of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG assessments, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of drug test results includes four fundamental phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a specimen into the laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an introductory rapid check for drugs. While it is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most cases, any positive indications from Screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples showing potential positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a probable positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are separated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity involved in hair drug testing.

The Confirmation of any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The full procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a much shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug testing is highly difficult to manipulate, enhancing result precision.
  • Chronological data: It offers insight into drug consumption patterns over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent activity: Detection in hair requires about 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drugs in the hair.

Note: Though sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", this method actually examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dalton Gardens, ID, hair follicle testing triumphs over urine tests through enhanced detection accuracy. Employers and professionals benefit from its longer detection window and reliable test results, ensuring zero-tolerance policies are fully supported, unlike standard urine tests that may miss recent drug exposure.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
