In Post Falls, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we maintain testing centers across numerous cities nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific substance detection.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting substance use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies rely on hair tests due to their extended detection period, often up to 90 days, and its nearly foolproof nature against tampering. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests still offer precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol use. The hair contains a prolonged chronology of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental, and/or more extensive tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Here, head hair refers only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other type (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the procedure of initial sample processing within a laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial query for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive result must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples that exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive findings from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can uncover drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: A hair drug test is quite arduous to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can provide a usage pattern of drugs over a given time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become perceptible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and unique hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When evaluating drug screening options in Post Falls, ID, hair follicle testing consistently surpasses urine tests. Hair testing's primary advantage lies in its superior detection accuracy, capturing a broader history of drug use than traditional methods. Employers gain more reliable insights due to its extended detection window, ensuring informed decisions about applicant background checks and compliance adherence.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Post Falls, ID, boasts an extended detection window, identifying drug use for up to 90 days. This prolonged period offers employers a detailed overview of an individual's substance history, crucial for making informed hiring decisions. This comprehensive method ensures that recent substance use, as well as historical patterns, are appropriately captured and documented.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Post Falls, ID, hair follicle drug tests are recognized for their tamper-resistant nature. The testing methodology significantly minimizes the possibility of sample adulteration, delivering indisputable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
